Project overview and background
With the increase of age, the demand for reading glasses becomes larger. However, there are some problems in the use of easy to forget the placement position and not beautiful. There are also some people who think that wearing reading glasses will “show old”, thus contradicting reading glasses. The purpose of this project is to design a new type of reading glasses that is light, comfortable, beautiful and not easy to lose, in order to meet the growing needs of the elderly population.
Project scope
- Product design:Including appearance modeling, material selection, functional layout and so on.
- Structure optimization:Product comfort and practicality, aesthetics, reduce the risk of loss.
- User Experience Research:In-depth understanding of the use habits and needs of the elderly, optimize product details.

Target market
This project is mainly aimed at elderly people over 60 years old, especially those who pay attention to the quality of life, the pursuit of fashion and practical consumers. At the same time, it also takes into account the potential market demand for some middle-aged people who need to wear reading glasses due to vision problems.
Target cost
Retail cost: Considering the characteristics of the elderly and quality assurance, the retail price of reading glasses with ordinary lenses is controlled at 20~50RMB, not more than 60RMB.

Appendix A: User portraits of our grandparents
1.Cultural background:
Most of our grandparents were born in the 1950s and are now in their 70s and 80s. They witnessed the founding of New China and its early social construction. They grew up in an era of planned economy, with relatively few materials but rich spirit. Culturally, they are deeply influenced by traditional culture and revolutionary culture, and pay attention to family, respect for the old and love the young, thrift and other traditional virtues. At the same time, they have also experienced special historical periods such as the Cultural Revolution and have a deep emotion for the fate of the country and the nation. In terms of material background, at that time, the level of economic development was limited, and their living standards were relatively low, but through their own efforts and struggles, they gradually improved their living conditions. Nowadays, with the progress of society and economic development, their living standards have been significantly improved, and they enjoy a better life in their old age than when they were young.
In terms of material life, most of them have a stable pension and social security, and their lives are relatively comfortable. However, with the growth of age, health problems gradually appear, such as chronic diseases, mobility problems, etc., become a major challenge in their lives. On a spiritual level, many older people long to stay close to their children and grandchildren and enjoy the warmth of their family. But the fast pace of life in modern society often makes them feel lonely and lost. In addition, with the development of science and technology, the elderly also face difficulties in adapting to the new technology, which limits their communication and integration with society to a certain extent.
2.Daily behavior activities:
Sports, like tai chi, square dance, farming, do not like high-intensity fitness, the reason: tai chi and square dance movement slow, can exercise the body and not easy to get injured; Some old people still like to farm as they did when they were young in good economic conditions, because it can give them a sense of accomplishment and moderate exercise. High-intensity fitness has high requirements on the body and is easy to cause physical discomfort.

Diet: like to eat coarse grains, without excessive processing of food, like to drink health tea, some old people like wine tasting, do not like to eat cold stimulating food, the reason: they have a wealth of health experience and living habits, health tea and coarse grains are good for health; The body’s immunity is reduced, and unhealthy food stimulated by raw and cold can easily lead to gastrointestinal discomfort.

Social: like to chat with neighbors, relatives and friends, like to participate in the activities of the elderly center, such as opera club, table tennis club, chess and cards with other elderly people, do not like to participate in the carnival party of young people, the reason: they continue the habit of collective labor, like to have social functions; Communicate with peers have common topics, the atmosphere is relaxed; Young people’s parties are too loud and fast-paced to blend in.

Hobbies: like to grow flowers and grass, decorate with festive and auspicious decorations, like to listen to opera, watch old movies, like to read books and newspapers, watch TV news, sports competitions, and even some elderly people like to play mobile phones, healthy old people still like sewing, do not like to stay up late, do not like exciting amusement projects, the reasons: Hobbies can cultivate sentiment, add fun to life, pass the time, and relieve the loneliness of life; They like content that evokes memories and emphasizes feelings; The physical performance of the elderly is reduced, and the physical discomfort brought by staying up late is too great.

3.Presbyopia and presbyopia:
Presbyopia is a common vision problem in the elderly, mainly caused by aging of the lens and weakened function of the ciliary muscle. With age, the eye’s ability to adjust decreases, resulting in blurred vision at close range. Presbyopia makes daily activities such as reading and sewing difficult and affects quality of life.
Appendix B: User demand survey
- Demand analysis: When the elderly use reading glasses, it is necessary to consider the lens degree, comfort, ease of use and aesthetics.
They need the right lens strength for their vision condition to get a clear vision. At the same time, the frame should be light and comfortable to reduce the sense of pressure when wearing. In addition, ease of use is also crucial, the elderly may have difficulty adjusting the frame due to reduced hand flexibility, so the design should be simple and easy to operate.
Elderly people’s memory decline, for the need to frequently remove, put on reading glasses, often can not find the problem, so reading glasses easy to find, not easy to lose is an important demand of the elderly. - Expectation survey: Through the survey, we found that the elderly hope that the reading glasses can have a variety of styles, lightweight materials, comfortable to wear, clear lenses, moderate price and other basic characteristics. At the same time, they also want to be able to buy reading glasses with additional functions such as anti-blue light and anti-fatigue. Some elderly people will hope to have a reading glasses that is not easy to lose or durable.

Thank you very much for sharing this detailed brief with us. We will start talking about the brief and start to get our initial ideas as soon as possible. Thank you!
Hello Nevra,
Does your team have any comments or need more information to commence your design activities?
Erik
The idea is nice and the brief is very thorough and well detailed. Only it is not easy to understand, even if largely explained, the cultural aspect that leads the Chinese to need a more flexible eyeglass more than other elders in the world. Probably all elders around the world would benefit from well-designed glasses and not just Chinese ones. nevertheless, the theme though too universal is also very interesting and useful. The theme about the joys of everyday life is there, and the specificity of the brief ensures that the design is successful
