Hi! I’m Defne Deniz Bülbül, a third-year industrial design student at ODTÜ in Ankara, Turkey. I have two names but i generally use “Defne”. in Turkish, “Defne” means “laurel”. And, in Greek mythology, “Daphne” was a nymph who transformed into a laurel tree to escape Apollo. “Deniz,” on the other hand, means “sea” in Turkish. My parents really love nature so they told me that they gave me nature themed names. In my free time, I love playing the piano, experimenting with music, painting and drawing.

I enjoy exploring new places and this summer ı had a lot of chance to do so during my europe trip and ı really enjoyed learning about different cultures and history.Additionally, cinema has always been a source of inspiration for me.Also ı have an adorable cockatiel named Robin who spends his days singing and often enjoys sleeping on my head and ı love animals so much . As someone who’s a bit introverted, I truly value moments spent in nature or with the people I love.

My favorite place in Ankara is our beautiful ODTÜ campus, where I find inspiration surrounded by nature and plenty of peaceful spots to relax and think creatively which is also a nice place for spending time with my friends. My favorite book is Kürk Mantolu Madonna by Sabahattin Ali, and my favorite movie is Vivre Sa Vie by Jean-Luc Godard. I also really enjoyed watching Dexter. When it comes to music, I’m a big fan of Yann Tiersen, Radiohead, Muse, Placebo, and Mitski.

Also,ı share my artworks in my instagram page sometimes when ı feel creative( ı try to sketch or make some paintings as much as ı can during my free times like ı drew a lot while ı was travelling in train rides or in plane during flights so ı decided to create a page 🙂 )here are some of my artworks:

One of my recent projects taht i really enjoyed involved creating a candle design from scrap metal. This design aimed to promote sustainability, reduce production and shipping costs, and encourage user involvement in the process and i really liked how it turned out. After graduation, I hope to build a career in sustainable design, possibly abroad, where I can hopefully have a meaningful impact.

Hello, Defne, nice to meet you. I’m Fuyuan(福源). I noticed you during the video conference today. I think you are a very beautiful person.😊 I see you mentioned that you are interested in the culture of other countries. How much do you know about Chinese culture? I like Chinese traditional culture very much. If you are interested, we can communicate. In addition, I am an outgoing person, looking forward to learning from you.🎉
I also love small animals, just a little curious does your parrot have blush? I think it’s cute to have two little blushes
Hello, Fuyuan! It’s so nice to meet you, and thank you for your kind words 🙂 I absolutely love traditional Chinese art, calligraphy, and architecture. While I don’t know a lot about Chinese culture yet, I’m really eager to learn more, and I’d love to hear about it from you! It would be a joy to discuss it together.
And about my bird—yes! He does have little red feathers that look like blushes on his cheeks. I think it’s so cute; he looks just like a cartoon character!
Sounds so cute!!!!! I also want to keep a parrot or other birds, but I may have to wait until I retire and have time to spend with him…
Hi Defne, thank you for explaining the meaning behind your names. Do you know who has given them to you and why?
Erik
Hi Erik! My parents chose my names because of their love for nature. The laurel tree, which is “Defne” in Turkish, symbolizes victory and honor, while the “Deniz” means sea. They both loved sea a lot and also we had a laurel tree in our home before ı was born they said that they really love the laurel tree and plants in general. They also loved how the names sound together. So, they named me “Defne Deniz” because of this. I really appreciate the thought they put into it—since I love nature too and find my names beautiful.
I can very well feel the beauty in the life you described, and I am happy that we both pay attention to the love between people and nature. I also enjoy nature, small animals, travel, and the natural environment where we can gain energy, especially when we are with loved ones. Our energy sources are very similar hahaha. I am very interested in how Turkey’s local culture is, and hope to have the opportunity to understand.
hi everyone!!ı updated my post and added more details,ı also attached some photos 🙂
