A way to take chimarrão wherever you go – inspired by the culture of Rio Grande do Sul

Project Overview “Chimarrão” is a very important part of the culture of Rio Grande do Sul, the southern state of Brazil. It’s a bitter drink that consists of boiling water mixed with hot maté tea, and it’s called “erva mate” in the state, it’s also known as just “mate”. The drinking of chimarrão is like a rite in itself for the people who live in Rio Grande do Sul, it’s often shared between friends and family in between gatherings or it’s merely appreciated by a single person in moments of relaxation. The problem is that chimarrão is not a simple drink that one can carry inside a bottle and drink from anywhere, the containers are also part of what makes the drink special. Chimarrão is drunk from a “cuia” through a metallic straw called “bomba”, the mate powder stays in the cuia while the boiling water stays in a different place, a bottle that keeps it warm and ready to be poured into the cuia. The problem is – carrying all that, the cuia, the bottle, and all the specific things that are involved in drinking chimarrão, can be quite troublesome. If the person goes to the park with their bike, for example, they might find it hard to carry everything, and since drinking chimarrão is one of the highlights of the life in Rio Grande do Sul, this idea came out of a wish to make those moments simpler. Project Aim This project aims to create a product that can make the experience of drinking chimarrão more “compact” while preserving the drink and the way it’s consumed, how can it be taken on trips without a big heavy bag? The product mustn’t erase any aspect of the culture of Rio Grande do Sul, such as changing the drink in any way or getting rid of aspects like the bomba or the cuia, but those can and are encouraged to be redesigned in a way that makes them easier to carry around. Another important aspect is the material that the product is created, it has to be resistant and lasting since chimarrão is a boiling hot drink, but the fabrication of it mustn’t have negative impacts on the environment. Project Objectives Project Objectives Cultural Celebration: The design of the product must exist to make the act of sharing and consuming chimarrão even easier. Ergonomics, accessibility, and aesthetics: It should be functional in a way that anyone could use it in any situation, like carrying it while walking, while inside a vehicle, while riding a bike, or anything like the sort. Tradition is very important to the people of Rio Grande do Sul, so it's encouraged that the aesthetic of the product also follows that path. Users The design is aimed at people who make drinking chimarrão a part of their everyday life, who bring it to gatherings and events to share with their loved ones or on walks by themselves. Our target users are adults since chimarrão is mainly drunk…

Beyza Can

Hiii there! I am Beyza Can, a 4th year industrial design student at METU. I am 22 years old and I will graduate this year but I do not feel to ready this. I really love METU campus and the student life in Ankara. But whatever, the course of life shows what will happen anyway. In my free time, I love spending time with my friends and also meeting new people. Besides this, sometimes I really get tired of being social and need being alone. At this times my room is my best friend. My skincare routines, candles, scented oils, my youtube and bed calm me and give me peace. I love exploring new places and new experiences. In general, vacations offer me this opportunity and I can travel to wherever I want. My hometown is Antalya, my family still live here and Antalya's humid sunny weather, the coastline, the mountain scenery and the people have always been great for me. That's why, I visit during my vacations, both to spend time with my family and to satisfy my longing for Antalya.Talking about design, my favourite project was MetuNature App. I really love diving into UI/UX design and had chance to get experience at my last internship at Jotform. You can reach me at beyzacanbeyaz@gmail.com, can.beyza_01@metu.edu.tr. And I am also available at whatsapp ( +90 553 525 45 04 )

Deniz Akay

Hello,I am Deniz Akay. I was born in Georgia/USA but now I live in Turkey. I am at the fourth and final year of my industrial design study in Middle East Technical University. I love the challenge of problem solving in design and that’s why I chose industrial design as a profession. In my spare time, I like riding my longboard down the hills and building things out of LEGO. I also like taking walks in the nature with my dog Rex and observe my surroundings. I have an interest in cars as well. I like playing racing games and watching motorsports. I also love listening to Cage the Elephant. My favorite project that I have completed is a personal blender where we had to identify problems with an existing blender and redesign it. We also had to consider sustainability of the redesigned product, and I really enjoyed trying to find ways to make it more sustainable while also trying to solve other problems. I enjoy designing house appliances and want to work in that field in the future where I would push to design more sustainable products.Email: deniz.akay@metu.edu.trTel: +90 (541) 413 23 21Instagram: @akaydenis.designer

Ezgi Semerci

Helloooo! I am Ezgi Semerci, a fourth-year Industrial Design student at Middle East Technical University. My name is Turkish Ezgi, from Greek μελῳδία (melōidía) meaning 'singing, chanting'. Although my name is related to music, unfortunately music is not a field that interests me very much. In my daily life, I am a very cheerful, energetic and smiling person. For the first week after I was born, my family still couldn't decide on my name and I was a nameless baby for a week. On March 25, 2002, I was born in Bursa which city is close to the Istanbul. It is a very beautiful city by the sea. The digital world has always been an area that has affected me a lot. I love playing Playstation and computer games. My favorite game is The Last of Us, but I also like horror and decision-making games like Until Down, Hacketts Quarry and Detroit, and their graphics inspire me. Design is like a game for me where I play with pleasure, make decisions and affect the rest of the way. I love it, have a lot of fun and think a lot. I managed to spread it to the rest of my life and looking at the world through a designer's eyes every moment is as enjoyable as playing a perfect game for me. I really enjoy making designer desserts. I even have a Tiktok account where I record all the processes!! You can access my videos by searching zgsmrc on Tiktok and I can give you the recipes if you want. I think when design and the food sector come together, a completely different art emerges. Even though I can't read as often as I used to, I still love reading books. World classics are my favorite genre to read. One of the books that has impressed me the most and that I have read in one go so far is Dostoyevsky's Gambler. I love being at school and dealing with design, I don't want my education to end, I feel like I can be engaged in design education forever. I am thinking of continuing my design education in the future. One of the projects I have done so far and that makes me proud is my cell design called Rosy Shield, which will make it easier to control forest fires. We developed it together with an environmental engineer friend and we hope it will be used in the future! Meeting people from different perspectives and different sectors and developing projects helps me refresh my brain and broadens my perspective. I embrace everyone and can't wait to meet you!!! Yüksel Ali Çevrük

Hello, I am Yüksel Ali Çevrük, a 4th year student at METU Industrial Design. I use both of my names, you can use whichever is easier for you. I have been living in Ankara since I was born. I chose this department because making models, disassembling and assembling things are among my biggest hobbies rather than product design. Then I realized that I made the right decision by choosing this department. One of the things I like most about the department right now is regularly developing new ideas, bringing these ideas to life, and having people test them. Making both digital and physical models is extremely enjoyable for me. That's why I start having more fun in class after a certain point. I do many sports outside of the department. My current goal is to join the school's frisbee team. But other than that, I also play tennis, basketball and billiards very often. I am also quite ambitious in billiards. I look forward to seeing those who are in Turkey or who are coming to play. You can also find my contact information below: mail: yalicevruk@gmail.com / yuksel.cevruk@metu.edu.trPhone number: +90 553 225 12 10Instagram: yalicvrk
