Initial Design Ideas & Concepts

Target User: Fuyuan’s mother’s father (user number 3) is very accustomed to wearing reading glasses, likely due to his past as a teacher. He uses them regularly for reading books, newspapers, messages on his phone, writing, and drawing. His glasses are always placed securely on a table or in a refined, coffee-colored case. The glasses he owns for now, themselves have a silver-gray frame with coffee-colored temples, combining style with practicality in his everyday routine.

  1. Easy-to-Find Glasses with Audible Alert

Glow-in-the-dark frames: Drawing from his habit of placing glasses securely, glow-in-the-dark frames are ideal for ensuring he can quickly find his glasses, even in a dim room. As he tends to leave his glasses in the same spot, this feature would help him locate them in darker environments without stress.
Audible locator system: To add convenience for someone organized like him, an audible locator triggered by a remote or app can be integrated. Since he values order, a wireless locator connected to different rooms would allow him to locate misplaced glasses quickly without disrupting his routine.
Comfort: He spends long periods reading and drawing, so silicone nose pads and ear hooks are designed to provide long-term comfort without leaving marks, ideal for his lifestyle.
Blue light protection: As he uses his phone and reads regularly, blue light protection can prevent eye strain and enhance his overall reading experience.

Design Concept:

  • Considering his taste for refined objects like his coffee-colored glasses case, the minimalistic design of GlowFind aligns with his aesthetic preferences, combining elegance with functionality.
  • The audible locator should be non-intrusive and compatible with his home setup. The frames can have classic colors like silver gray or coffee brown, similar to his current glasses style, ensuring a seamless integration into his routine.
  1. Positioning Stand with Charging and Storage

Integrated stand with charging: Since Fuyuan’s grandfather places his glasses securely on a table, this concept would provide a designated place for his glasses, reducing the chance of misplacement. An integrated charging function supports smart zoom or other technology his glasses might include in the future.
Carrying case integration: A detachable carrying case would be a perfect fit for his organizational habits. This ensures he can easily take the glasses with him when leaving the house while keeping them protected in the same way he values his current eyeglass case.
Positioning memory: An app or Bluetooth integration can record the last location of the glasses, which might be useful in moments of forgetfulness, although his careful nature may reduce the need for this feature.
Comfort: The soft-touch silicone material would provide a comfortable fit during extended use, such as when he’s reading or drawing, allowing him to wear the glasses for long periods without discomfort.

Design Concept:

  • The stand design can match the elegant, classic style that appeals to him—offered in finishes like dark wood or metallic tones that align with his personal preferences.
  • The stand also provides an optimal angle for storage, reducing the risk of accidental damage to the frames or lenses. The magnetic carrying case is easy to attach and detach, combining practicality with his love for well-designed objects.
  1. Lightweight & Adjustable Glasses with Enhanced Durability

Sleek silicone frames: For someone who engages in prolonged reading and drawing, lightweight silicone frames ensure comfort and prevent pressure on the nose and ears. Given his love for refined objects, the material would balance elegance with durability.
Adjustable fit: The adjustable temple arms provide flexibility and comfort, allowing for a custom fit. This is essential for users like him, who may experience subtle changes in facial structure over time but prefer glasses that maintain long-term comfort.
Durable lens coating: With his attention to placing his glasses securely, the scratch-resistant coating offers peace of mind when the glasses are occasionally misplaced or exposed to wear and tear.
Hanging feature: A discreet hanging loop would enable him to hang the glasses securely on his shirt or hook when needed. As someone who organizes his glasses carefully, this ensures they’re always within reach without the risk of being lost or damaged.
Blue Light Protection: Given his regular use of digital devices and the need for clear vision during activities like reading or drawing, the blue light filter and progressive multifocal lenses would enhance his experience, making these glasses adaptable for various tasks throughout the day.

Design Concept:

  • The classic design with customizable colors such as silver gray or coffee brown would fit seamlessly with his refined aesthetic. These colors would match his current style preferences, offering both elegance and practicality.
  • The emphasis on durability and lightweight features is key for someone who frequently uses glasses for focused activities. These glasses would combine functionality with comfort, fitting into his lifestyle without interruption.

Additional Consideration for All Concepts:
Customization for Style: In all three designs, the option to customize the frame color to silver-gray or coffee brown would allow him to feel more connected to his glasses, reflecting his personal taste and making them feel like a natural extension of his existing belongings.
Functional Aesthetic: Since he appreciates refined, well-made objects (like his coffee-colored glasses case), each design concept focuses not only on functionality but also on an aesthetic that fits into his lifestyle and personal preferences.

We have shared the three design proposals we developed based on the brief you provided. We are looking forward to your feedback and are excited to answer any questions you may have regarding the designs or product development stages. 🙂

First of all, I apologize for my poor consideration. When we were creating the design brief, I was responsible for writing the research content and used subjective words such as “mine” without any annotations. This elderly person is actually my grandfather, which caused misunderstandings and trouble for you.
We have carefully read the preliminary design concept you provided. Based on the personal situation of the client and the thinking of our team, we would like to provide some small suggestions for your initial concept as follows:
For the consideration of the luminous structure: reading glasses are only needed when reading, so this functional structure guides the elderly to read in the dark. However, I find it difficult to imagine the size and brightness of the luminous structure on the glasses, and this makes it difficult for the elderly to find reading glasses in the dark. It’s great that this functional design does provide a way of thinking. We can make reading glasses appear at night by turning off the lights, which is an indirect way of highlighting things themselves by weakening other things. I am considering whether the combination of special display materials and glasses is a good way to improve the anti loss performance of glasses, which may only be answered in the future.
Regarding the intelligent positioning system: This is feasible, which leads to the design of smart reading glasses. The relevant intelligent functions can be connected to the intelligent cloud through integrated technology, and the intelligent information can be sent to my elderly person’s phone, whether it is through listening to warning signals for positioning or through intelligent map guidance.
Charging bracket: This is great, I recommend wireless charging, but I am not familiar with the shape of the bracket and the length of charging time. If the charging time is too long, it will cause the glasses to fall off dust. I hope the bracket can have the function of preventing dust from the glasses case, and if the charging bracket is combined with the glasses case, how to place the glasses cleaning cloth should be noted. In addition, intelligent zoom technology is a lens technology that does not require charging.
Frame material and design: Other materials can be used to combine the frame with silicone nose pads and ear hooks, or all silicone materials are acceptable. As long as they are comfortable, beautiful, and durable, it is better to combine these materials with the intelligent structure. The elasticity of nose pads and mirror legs is indeed important, and they are best connected to the frame through high-quality metal bearings to ensure durability while being adjustable. If there is a chance, I will ask my grandfather what kind of glasses he likes when we meet.
Lens function: The intelligent zoom technology mentioned earlier is a progressive multifocal lens that achieves intelligent zoom by setting multiple focal points on the lens. Although it is intelligent, it does not include electronic functions. The price of ordinary multifocal lenses is not very high, so there is no need to worry, as long as it is mentioned in the design specifications. The anti scratch coating and anti blue light function are also very good and can be added completely.
Hanging function: I don’t know in what form, but now the structure of glasses can be directly hung on shirts or hooks, but I also hope that you can design a more fashionable structure to achieve this function.
These suggestions are my immature ideas when reading, for reference only. If there are any questions, I am glad to communicate with you.
